Studio B is our 2nd largest control room, and with a big but controlled sound quality, and also features a D Command control surface. Like all of the control rooms Studio B features walls with a bark covering, an acoustic feature associated with the 70s studio designs and a good diffusor as well. Excellent low level monitoring in Surround Sound is assured because Studio B’s computer and expansion chassis are housed in a machine room as well.

Studio History

As a mastering room Studio B did its fair share of radio syndication, and it was also the CD mastering room for Location Recording Service. It was primarily operated by Kevin Gray, now of AcousTech Mastering, who with Steve Hoffman remastered many classic albums for DCC’s 24 Karat Gold Disc CD series. The artists remastered included The Eagles, Paul McCartney, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Cream, The Doors, Heart and many more.

chassis - The housing for removable disk modules. The chassis contains a power supply, drives, and connectors for each module.

surround sound - A multi channel audio format that involves a mix of three or more channels, to provide a more immersive listening experience. The most common format is 5.1 (5 satellite speakers plus a subwoofer) but 7.1 (7 satellite speakers plus a subwoofer) is gaining ground in Home Entertainment, especially with video games. The .1 indicates the reduced bandwidth of the LFE channel. Increased bandwidth options, newer codecs and the emergence of BluRay allow audio delivery in Surround Sound to be discreet to each channel, whereas in the past some encoding formats offered a matrixed delivery.

mastering - Mastering is an audio post production process where completed audio mixes are assembled, edited and processed for the maximum production value effect, with a consideration for consistency within any collection of multiple songs or audio files. Mastering may also prepare the audio output for digital downloads and manufacturing of CDs, vinyl records and DVDs; including PQ marks, the proper audio format, sampling rate and any compression required. Mastering typically does not involve video, which is usually considered authoring. “Mastering in the mix” completes the mastering process within the mix itself.
