Did You Know?

The only "editing" that was done in the earliest days of filmmaking was to stop cranking the camera, move it to another spot, then begin cranking again (rather like generations of home-movies and amateur videotapes to come). A pioneer director would invent "special effects" by stopping his camera after creating a puff of smoke in front of his actor, then starting the camera again without the actor, making it seem as if the actor simply vanished.
