LA Final Cut Pro Users Group - “The Avid/FCP 2-Step”

By Kate Logan | November 13, 2009

Well speaking of the devil … just as I blogged on shows cut on FCP verses Avid, here comes LAFCPUG with a meeting dedicated to just that issue!

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 beginning at 6:45PM - at Gallery Theatre in Hollywood Ca.

The perception, (especially among FCP users) is that Final Cut Pro is slowly but surely taking over the post industry. While that maybe true in the “Indy” world, the reality is the Avid Media Composer is still firmly entrenched in Hollywood feature films and broadcast television. In order for you to compete in Hollywood it’s important to know BOTH tools.

So lafcpug will devote the entire evening to the Avid/FCP 2-step.

What are the big differences between the Avid MC and FCP?
Is it hard to learn the Avid if I know just FCP?
Do I really need to learn the Avid?
And other FAQs

Join us as legendary film and sound editor Walter Murch returns to lafcpug to discuss “what is it like going from the Avid to FCP and back to the Avid.” Mr. Murch will bring along his assistant editors Greg Thompson and Dave Cory for an assistant editor POV.

Also editor Steve Cohen will show us what is new in the Avid MC 4.0.

Shane Ross will show off the new Mix & Match capability in MC4.0 which allows you to combine different formats, frame rates, and resolutions all in the same timeline.

Plus Stump The Gurus with Andrew Balis, Stephen Kanter, Shane Ross and more. And of course, World famous Raffle

This meeting will require registration in order to attend.

This page and the agenda will be frequently updated.

This will be the last lafcpug meeting of 2009.

Ticket are on sale now at http://avidfcp.eventbrite.com/?ref=ebtnTickets will be $8.00 each. No refunds

Agenda (Subject to change)

6:45- 7:15PM - Stump the Gurus
Join FCS Gurus Andrew Balis, Stephen Kanter, Shane Ross and TBD as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning FCS. If they can’t solve your problem or answer your question, then you go home with a problem, but you still got out of the house, so that’s not a bad thing.
7:25PM - 7:55PM - Avid Media Composer 4.0, Avid Media Access - Shane Ross
Shane Ross will show off and talk about Avid Media Access and getting footage INTO Avid MC, and
then the ability to mix and match that footage. Shane will combine different formats, frame rates, and resolutions all in the same timeline using only 2 hands and no net.7:55PM - 8:30PM - What’s New in Media Composer 4.0 - Steve Cohen
Editor and Avid Guru Steve Cohen will show off some of the new and not so new features of MC 4.0. Steve will give a brief overview of the new editorial features in 4.0, mainly a demo of “transition preservation.” Also, an overview of advanced keyframes for visual effects — not a new feature in 4.0, but “new-ish,” and a big improvement for anybody who does a lot of effects. Makes the MC work more like After Effects. Steve will then give us a look at why the trim mode is so great. Namely that you can trim any group of clips in any direction with playing video and audio to guide you. And you can monitor any part of the trim. And more, time permitting.8:35PM - 9:00PM - Break
In the lobby will be many FCS Gurus. This is your chance to ask questions. No questions? Veescope Live will be in lobby. Also Footagehead.com with kick butt stock footage. Also brand new lafcpug sponsor DTS, makers of the industry standard audio solution for Blu-ray Discs, Surcode for DTS-HD will be in the lobby. Also meeting sponsor MelroseMac will be there answering all your questions. And food from Chef Jeff Stansfield.

The break is a chance to hang out and meet and greet and get your problems solved and who knows, get a job. You never know who you are going to meet at lafcpug. Snacks and Beer and Wine will be on sale in the lobby. Proceeds go to the Gallery Theater.

9:00PM - 9:50PM - “What’s it like going from Avid to FCP and back to Avid?” - Walter Murch
legendary film and sound editor Walter Murch returns to lafcpug to discuss “what is it like going from the Avid to FCP and back to the Avid.” Walter has been editing with Final Cut Pro for several years after having used the Avid for several years. And now he is back on the Avid editing a movie here in Los Angeles. Mr. Murch will bring along his assistant editors Greg Thompson and Dave Cory for an assistant editor POV. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
