TMZ: The Thirty-Mile Studio Zone

By Mike Flanagan | July 28, 2008

The Thirty-Mile Studio Zone is where the L.A. entertainment industry is centered, encompassing the area within the circle defined by extending 30 miles from the intersection of Beverly Blvd. and La Cienega Blvd. Here’s a regular map of the TMZ.

FilmL.A. is the agency in Los Angeles responsible for issuing filming permits. FilmLA’s Interactive 30-Mile Zone Map uses Google Maps to identify the area known as the Thirty-Mile Studio Zone, or just the Thirty-Mile Zone.

The Thirty-Mile Zone has its origin point at the Beverly Center (shopping center on Beverly Boulevard just East of Beverly Hills). The Thirty-Mile Zone (TMZ) inspired the name for TMZ, the popular celebrity news blog.

Formally, the entertainment industry unions use the TMZ area definition to determine rates and work rules for union workers. The TMZ helps define “where the action is” in the entertainment media industry. I’ve written in previous posts about the value of knowing where the high density of production companies and studios reside for people looking for jobs and career advancement, because these high-density areas (hot spots) are where you can really meet people in The Biz.

Refer to my two Hanging Out at Hot Spots posts for my insights on that topic.
